My friend and I had traveled to Williamsburg together many times. We were both teachers, but this trip was a vacation.
One evening, after dinner, we stopped at one more store before returning to our timeshare. It was a pleasant night, so we sat outside The General Store with ice cream. It was about 8:30 when several tour buses pulled into the parking lot.
“Doesn’t the store close at nine?” I asked.
“I think so,” my friend said.
By 8:45, the bus doors had opened and a crowd of excited teenagers was heading straight for the ice cream. Then the chaperones stepped off. The students were delighted to be out of their seats and were running in every direction. I watched the adults trying to keep up and felt for them.
“They’re never going to make it,” I told my friend. “The store closes in fifteen minutes. Do you care?”
“Nope,” she said. “Do you?”
We smiled at each other and finished our ice cream. If we had been there with students of our own, we would have gone straight into teacher mode. But that night, we were both on vacation.
