I bought this antique blue-and-white pitcher at auction a long time ago. It isn’t perfect. There’s a little chip on the spout, but it reminded me of my mother’s blue-and-white china. My grandparents had several similar pieces in their home, too, and I always admired them.
So although the pitcher was new to me, there was something familiar about it.
I chose dried hydrangeas because I wanted something that looked as though it belonged in the pitcher—or had been there for some time. Nothing too new or bright. Just flowers that seemed at home with an older piece.
Over the years, the pitcher has moved around my house, from the dining table to a bookcase, and now to my mother’s writing desk.
I like that it has found a place there: a pitcher that reminded me of her china, sitting on her desk.
