Growing up, my sister and I had many cats over the years, but never an orange one. Apparently, the Cat Distribution System decided that I needed an orange kitten, so Pumpkin arrived as a tiny six-week-old and was immediately put to work catching his first mouse.
Even though orange cats have a reputation for having only one functioning brain cell and are usually jobless, Pumpkin was the exception to the rule.
He not only caught the mouse but had many other jobs over the years. These included lounging on the stairs until his toe got stepped on one too many times, which necessitated its removal, and visiting the neighbor cats. During one visit, he fell asleep in a windowsill and fell out onto the ground, where he spent the rest of the afternoon lounging under a bush.
His most important job was going to the vet for a urinary tract infection and refusing to urinate until his “mother” came to rescue him from the cage and give him a good talking-to. She reminded him that he was not coming home until he cooperated.
He immediately decided to cooperate.
Pumpkin came home and spent several more years being a big brother to “the worst kitten ever,” Batly.
After crossing the Rainbow Bridge, he spends his time mentoring other oranges on the importance of using their brain cells and working in Human Resources to assist other orange kittens and cats who have been unjustly fired from their jobs.
